From Combustion to Innovation: My Journey into Building Electric Vehicles

June 6, 2017 Posted by Mike Cars, Technology

Converting Combustion Vehicles to Electric

In May 2017, I had the exciting opportunity to attend a workshop in Redding, California, focused on converting combustion vehicles to electric. Earlier that year, I discovered Richard van Wyhe’s YouTube channel, EV4U, which featured an incredible collection of videos teaching enthusiasts how to build their own electric vehicles using existing cars. The channel also offered a hands-on, three-day workshop in a garage setting, covering every aspect of converting a vehicle to an electric drivetrain. It was an inspiring and educational experience that deepened my passion for sustainable technology!

Converting ICE to EV

The workshop was an incredibly informative three-day experience that covered a wide range of topics. We learned about AC and DC motors, batteries, EV circuits, and many other foundational concepts in electric vehicles. Each day built upon the last, providing a clear progression of knowledge. On the third day, we had an especially exciting opportunity to work on a practical project. We converted a sand buggy to electric and even had the chance to test drive it afterward. This hands-on activity brought all the concepts we had learned to life in a tangible way. The process of transforming the vehicle and experiencing its performance firsthand was both rewarding and inspiring. It sparked my curiosity about the mechanics of battery technology and motivated me to delve deeper into the workings of electric vehicle drivetrains. This experience not only enhanced my understanding but also ignited a passion for exploring the future of sustainable transportation.

Mike Rosik

I bring over 20 years of experience in creative and technical design and development, with a specialization in user experience and design prototyping. I hold a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Computer Animation and have worked across diverse industries, including automotive, education, software, visual effects, and startups.  I’m also an FAA licensed drone pilot based in Oxford, Michigan.

In recent years, I have actively leveraged emerging technologies like AI, vibe coding, and APIs to enhance my prototypes and projects. My expertise spans app and web-based user interfaces, AR/VR/XR, improving user experiences, microcontrollers, Node.js cloud servers, AWS cloud integration, and innovative storytelling methodologies. Additionally, I have explored physical prototyping tools, such as using cardboard for occlusion surfaces, to improve augmented and virtual reality experiences and spark creative solutions. I am particularly passionate about photogrammetry and 3D model generation, utilizing advanced techniques like Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and Gaussian splatting to create high-quality, immersive assets from photos and videos.

Collaboration and user-centered design are at the core of my process. I engage with stakeholders and end users to fully understand their goals and challenges, transforming their feedback into personas, journey maps, and user flows that outline an optimal path to success. By focusing on the user, I not only create intuitive and impactful experiences but also uncover overlooked opportunities for improvement, ensuring the final design delivers maximum value.
