Teaching Jeep Maintenance With a 3D Jeep You Can Actually Touch
A UX case study: turning a dry owner’s manual into an interactive experience for Jeep Wrangler owners, across desktop, mobile and VR.

The problem
Ask a new Wrangler owner how often to change their transfer case fluid and you get a shrug, a guess, or a forum thread where four strangers confidently contradict each other. The real answers live in manuals nobody reads, and getting them wrong costs real money: stripped threads, wrong fluids, damaged hardware.
My design challenge: could maintenance knowledge feel like a game instead of a chore?
What I built
Trail & Error is a free browser based maintenance simulator for the Wrangler JK and JL. No install, no account. You tell it what you drive, and it hands you a living 3D model of your Jeep covered in glowing markers, each one a maintenance system waiting to be explored.
Three ideas anchor the design:
- The vehicle is the interface. You navigate by spinning the Jeep and touching parts, not by digging through menus.
- Time is a slider. Scrub from zero to 200,000 miles and watch systems change color as they come due.
- Honesty is a feature. Every spec is graded by the quality of its sources, and unverified values say so.
Let people play with time

The mileage slider turns maintenance from a list of chores into something you can see coming. Markers speak a simple color language: red means do it now, amber means soon, green means breathing room. Testers scrubbed the slider back and forth just to watch their Jeep age, and accidentally memorized their service schedule doing it. Play first, learn as a side effect.
The Jeep is the map

Touch a marker and a drawer opens with what the system does, why it matters, and the exact fluids, parts and torque specs you need with a wrench in hand. The camera glides in close, and the drawer’s accent color matches the urgency of the marker you touched.
Earn trust, do not assume it
Maintenance advice is a trust problem, so I built the sourcing into the product:
- Sources are tiered: factory documentation first, parts catalogs second, community knowledge third.
- A spec earns a Verified badge only when two quality sources agree.
- Unverified values are labeled honestly instead of guessed, and anyone can audit which document backs which number.
A maintenance tool that quietly guesses is worse than no tool at all. The visible gaps are what make the verified numbers believable.

Mobile is not a shrunken desktop:
- One tap shows a marker’s name, a second tap opens it. No accidental jumps from fat fingers.
- The slider moves to the bottom, into thumb range, and the 3D view stays pinned while you scrub.
- The hardware back button closes the drawer instead of leaving the app.
And then I put you inside it

With a WebXR headset, the Jeep is parked in front of you at full scale. Walk around it, crouch by the front axle, open the same systems by pointing, and let narrated audio walk you through each part like a guided garage tour.
What I learned
Fun is a delivery mechanism for information. People who would never read a maintenance chart happily poked bubbles for twenty minutes and left knowing their service intervals.
Honesty can be an interface. Showing the seams in my own data made the rest believable.
The medium should bend, not the idea. One concept survived intact across desktop, mobile and VR: explore, scrub time, open a system. Mouse, thumb, or hand in the air in an immersive experience.
